What electric car should I buy?

You've come to the right place if you’re looking for your next vehicle and considering an electric car. We have a whole range of electric car guides to help you through your journey to choosing an electric vehicle (EV). In this article, we take a look at some of the choices and decisions you need to make that will help you answer what electric car you should buy.

Vehicle size

When deciding if to buy any vehicle, one of the first things you need to consider is the size of the car you want to buy; this will help to narrow down the choices and leave you with a more manageable list to select from. All cars come in classifications based on their size and practical features. There are many different car classifications which vary depending on the website you are using. At SPOTiCAR, we use the following categories found in the category search function.

  • City car - these are small cars best suited for city driving.

  • Hatchback - these are larger cars and sometimes called family cars.

  • Commercial vehicle - vehicles that are used for commercial purposes, e.g. vans.

  • MPV - multi-purpose vehicles, think people carriers.

  • Convertible - cars which have a removable or retractable roof.

  • Pick-up - large trucks with a separate back section for carrying goods, often left open.

  • Coupe - small sporty cars low to the ground.

  • Saloon - closed body cars with a separate boot, typically more executive style cars.

  • SUV - family cars with a higher driving position.

  • Estate - cars with an elongated boot section.

The most popular electric cars are city cars, commercial vehicles, hatchbacks, and SUVs. You should select the best car category for your needs based on how you will use the vehicle.

Vehicle range and charging

When choosing an electric vehicle, you should consider the range you need the car to drive on a full charge. This will be based on how far you drive each day and your access to charging points at home or on the go. If you already have a charging point installed or have limited charging points on your regular routes, you should opt for an electric car suitable for charging at these charging points and using your home charger.

Budget

Budget is an essential factor that may limit your choice of vehicle. When looking at options, remember to include the cost of your home charger if you consider getting one installed for your electric vehicle. Electric cars can be more expensive than petrol and diesel vehicles to purchase initially. However, they are cheaper to run, and you can make your money back over time as you won't need to buy petrol or diesel. In addition, electric vehicles have no clean air zone charge, cost £0 in road tax, and are cheaper to maintain due to fewer moving parts. Calculate your budget based on your total running costs, including fuel. This way, you might have a bit more money to spare on a monthly finance agreement.

Vehicle make and model

Many motorists have preferences around the make and model of the car they want to drive. Most large car manufacturers are now beginning to produce and sell electric versions of their most popular models. If you prefer specific vehicle makes or models, you will find sticking to the manufacturer you like an easier transition to an electric car.
