Want a hatchback with a bit more space or all the advantages of a 4x4 without all the bulk? Then a compact SUV like a Volkswagen (VW) T-Roc might be your ideal option. Practical, spacious and comfortable, there are plenty of models currently available on the used market, making them great for any driver looking for a second-hand family car. Discover how to find the best used VW T-Roc in this SPOTiCAR guide.

What models are available?

In its small SUV form, the VW T-Roc combines all the benefits of extra space, higher ride level and comfort of a 4x4 with the compact shape and fun driving style of a hatchback. It’s also available with a range of trim and petrol and diesel engine types, meaning each driver can find a T-Roc to suit their needs:

  • 1.0L TSI - this petrol engine is the standard offering in the range. With three cylinders, it offers both efficiency and power, reaching up to 55.4mpg and providing 115bhp.
  • 1.5L TSI Evo - an all-around petrol engine, its technology reaches a real-world efficiency of 53.5mpg and a top speed of 127mph.
  • 2.0L TSI - the quickest petrol engine in the range, it has 190bhp and a top speed of 134mph.
  • 2.0L TDI - offering the best fuel economy of the whole range, it can reach up to 56.5mpg and a top speed of up to 124mph.

The two transmission options for the range are six-speed manuals and seven-speed automatics, meaning there’s something for every driver. Plus, there are three trim levels which offer a variety of technology and style features:

  • SE - the standard option for the T-Roc, it includes smartphone connectivity, adaptive cruise control, lane assist and parking sensors as well as 17-inch alloys and roof rails.
  • Design - as the name suggests, this T-Roc has exterior trim upgrades that make it even more stylish alongside ambient lighting and a driver alert system.
  • SEL - the top-of-the-range trim level includes LED lights, navigation, four driving modes and an Active Info Display to help drivers with useful information.

Which used VW T-Roc should you choose?

With huge amounts of safety features, lots of space and a higher ride, the VW T-Roc makes a great family car. The SUV also does well on reliability and customer satisfaction surveys. Plus, with diesel and petrol engines, there are fuel-efficient options for taking short trips in towns and cities or for those who regularly commute long distances. The 2.0L TSI petrol engine offers 190bhp, a top speed of 134mph and a 0-62mph acceleration in just over 7 seconds. In contrast, the 1.0L TSI petrol engine has a fuel efficiency of 55.4mpg.  At SPOTiCAR we have a large range of Volkswagen T-Roc for sale under £20,000 or less than 20,000 miles

What should you look out for in a used VW T-Roc?

Well rated for its reliability, there are very few reported problems with the VW T-Roc. However, there are some issues you need to check as you view a car or look at its service and MOT record:

  • Manual supplements: some manuals are missing key passenger safety information in 2017 and 2018 models, so it’s important that a supplement is provided.
  • Trim: lumbar support was added to seats in 2018 and younger models. Plus, it’s worth checking alloy wheels and interior trim to assess any damage.
  • Engine electrics: ensure any T-Roc you buy has had a thorough check to ensure the engine electrics are functioning correctly.
  • Brakes: try out the brakes on any test drive and make sure they’ve been inspected by a mechanic before you buy.
  • Air con: some issues have been reported with the air con, so this needs to be tested before you buy any T-Roc model.
