Used Volkswagen Tiguan

Buying a used VW Tiguan

One of Volkswagen's first crossover SUVs to be released to the market, the VW Tiguan encompasses all of the car maker’s key qualities and combines them with the practicality and spaciousness of the larger model. Affordable, comfortable and with plenty of room, the VW Tiguan is ideal for anyone looking for a practical family vehicle. Find out all about its features and what you need to look for in a used model with this SPOTiCAR guide.

What models are available?

Released in 2008, the VW Tiguan was designed to be a premium-yet-affordable SUV that covered everything a middle-class family driver would need. Initially available with four-wheel drive (which VW calls 4 Motion), front-wheel-drive models came later, meaning there are now used models capable of taking on any weather conditions or terrain. There are also plenty of petrol or diesel engine choices, meaning drivers looking for either fuel efficiency or driving performance will be equally as satisfied:

  • 1.4L TSI 150PS - the standard petrol engine in the range, it still offers 148bhp and a top speed of 119mph.

  • 2.0L TSI 170PS - with the bigger engine comes an upgrade in power with 168bhp and a 125mph top speed.

  • 2.0L TSI 200PS - this higher spec option provides the best driving performance of the range with 197bhp and a 0-62mph acceleration of just under 8 seconds.

  • 2.0L TDI 140PS - if you’re looking for fuel efficiency, this is a great option, with a reported fuel economy of 40.9mpg.

  • 2.0L TDI 170PS - this engine combined efficiency with driving power, with a 40.4mpg efficiency and 168bhp.

Most of the engine types come with the choice of either a manual or automatic gearbox (look for DSG in the model name if you prefer an auto). Plus, there are six trim levels available across the VW Tiguan range, meaning drivers will be able to find an appropriate level of comfort and technology:

  • S - despite being the entry-level trim, there are plenty of luxuries in this model, with air con, electric windows, remote central locking, an electronic parking brake, an adjustable driver’s seat and a movable steering wheel coming as standard.

  • SE - one of the most popular trim levels, the SE has the added benefits of roof rails, height and lumbar adjustment in the front seats, a touchscreen media dashboard and even folding picnic tables and storage drawers.

  • Sport - this trim creates a model that stands out from the rest of the range. The 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats, suspension and automatic lights give this trim a more modern feel.

  • Escape - as the name suggests, this model is designed to take you further with greater ground clearance, off-road settings, hill-descent control and a compass.

  • R Line - the sportiest option in the range, the interior trims have also had an upgrade, with a bigger media touchscreen and VW App-Connect.

  • Match - this model offers the most powerful engine options and the added technologies of parking assistance and sat nav.

Which used VW Tiguan should you choose?

Designed to be a comfortable and premium SUV option, all the VW Tiguans have been noted as good performers on the road. Plus, there are engine options depending on whether you want to prioritise power or fuel efficiency. The 2.0L TDI petrol engine will give drivers all the performance they need while also being cost-effective to run. Similarly, the 140PS diesel engine performs well in terms of fuel efficiency and will get you to most places with front-wheel drive.

There is also a range of trim options depending on the level of comfort and technology you’d prefer. Most choose the SE line for its extra comfort and media, although the R-Line is the top-of-the-line spec for those looking for a more modern and luxurious option.

What should you look out for in a used VW Tiguan?

The VW Tiguan was rated very well in terms of its safety when it was released. However, there have been some problems noted with models’ reliability. So if you’re buying a used model, it’s important to have a test drive and check the MOT and service history for the following problems:

  • Ignition coil pack failures that stop the engine from turning over.

  • Clock spring faults that cause the airbag warning light to come on, the steering wheel buttons and the car horn to fail.

  • Issues with the timing chain and tensioner that can cause a drop in engine performance or rattling noises on a test drive.

  • Problem with the water pump that causes the coolant indicator to come on or leaks to appear below the vehicle.

  • A defective N8o valve that can affect fuel economy and cause a popping noise in the boot of the car.

  • Plastic intake manifolds have been reported to fail, causing problems with engine performance.

  • Any clunks or squeaks you hear on a test drive could be a sign of problems with the subframe.
