Buying a used Vauxhall Meriva

The Vauxhall Meriva, or the Opel Meriva as it was known across Europe, was launched in 2003 as a mini MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). Smaller than a full-size MPV or minivan, these cars often have higher roofs, easier passenger access via a sliding door and the ability to reconfigure the rear seating by folding, sliding or removing. If you’re searching for an affordable, roomy and practical used car, look no further than the Meriva. Production of new vehicles stopped in 2017 but read our used buying guide below to find out what models are still available, which we recommend and what to look out for.

What models are available?

The Meriva is a small people carrier that’s ideal for families who need comfort and space or for people who want a car they can travel and camp in. Like the larger Vauxhall Zafira, the Meriva is characterised by its flexible interior, or FlexSpace, with the second generation offering a unique rear opening passenger door. Drivers get an elevated seat, five seats, a decent level or equipment and handy storage spaces plus several trim levels to pick from:

  • Vauxhall Meriva Life: The entry-level Meriva standard features are 16” alloy wheels, air con, front fog lights, cruise control and Bluetooth.
  • Vauxhall Meriva Club: Upgrading to Club gives drivers curtain airbags (side airbags which protect the head), cupholders and a chrome exhaust tip.
  • Vauxhall Meriva Tech Line: The mid-range trim has 17” alloy wheels, electric windows, parking sensors, heated front seats and steering wheel.
  • Vauxhall Meriva SE: The top-end trim comes with extra storage under the front seats, Vauxhall’s OnStar personal assistant system and a panoramic sunroof.

Since 2005, there have been various petrol or diesel engine choices for the Meriva. Below is our extensive list, but when buying used you’re most likely to come across the second-generation choices:

First generation (2003-2010)

  • 1.0L Z10XEP I3 Petrol:
  • 1.4L K4J I4 Petrol
  • 1.6L Z16XE I4 Petrol
  • 1.6L Z16SE I4 Petrol
  • 1.6L I4 Turbocharged petrol
  • 1.8L Z18XE I4 Petrol
  • 1.3L CDTi I4 Diesel
  • 1.7L DTi and CDTi I4 Diesel

Second generation (2010-2017)

  • 1.4L I4 Petrol
  • 1.4L I4 turbo Petrol
  • 1.3L I4 Diesel
  • 1.6L I4 Diesel
  • 1.7L I4 Diesel

Which Vauxhall Meriva should you choose?

The standard trim Vauxhall Meriva comes with all the features drivers and family’s need for safe and comfortable travelling. However, the Tech Line does have the extra Club cupholders and airbags plus the added luxury of heated seats which are always a bonus when driving on cold early mornings. The turbo-powered petrol engines are best if you need a bit more power while the diesel options will be quieter and smoother if you regularly drive long distances on the motorway – especially the 1.6.

What should you look out for in a used Vauxhall Meriva?

The Vauxhall Meriva is one of the most reliable mini MPVs on the used car market. Since 2010, there have been 21 recalls with the vast majority being seatbelt related.

  • Seatbelts: Between 2010 and 2016, various seat belt faults were reported like loss of function and malfunction in the event of an accident. When looking at used models, carefully checks all the seat belts and ask the retailer for the service history.
  • Engine: Between 2013 and 2015, some cars stalled due to a ‘chafing condition between an engine wiring harness and transmission housing’ which could cause random engine failure. Assess this on a test drive and request a full service history.
  • Steering (RAC): Some drivers suffered an electric fault which caused the steering to fail.
  • DPF: Some drivers reported clogging issues, if you’re considering buying a diesel Meriva, look for an illuminated or flashing DPF warning light and ask the retailer about maintenance of the filter.
