Suzuki Vitara

Suzuki has long been making all-terrain vehicles and 4x4s and the Vitara was one of the manufacturer’s first compact SUV models. A practical and family-friendly car, a used Suzuki Vitara is a great option for anyone looking for a crossover that’s cost-efficient to run and comfortable to drive. Find out all about how to find a great used Suzuki Vitara with SPOTiCAR.

What models are available?

The fourth generation of the Suzuki Vitara was released to the market in 2014. A more modern and compact version of the previous model generations, there are a variety of engine, transmission and trim options now available on the used market. Depending on your specific needs, you can choose from the following petrol or diesel engine types:

  • 1.6L Petrol: one of the standard options available on the Vitara’s launch, this engine is available in pre-2018 models and is cost-effective and reliable with a top speed of 112mph.

  • 1.6L Diesel: though this engine option was dropped post-2018, it provides good levels of fuel economy, around 120bhp and a top speed of 112mph.

  • 1.0L Boosterjet: the entry-level engine option in more recent Vitara models, it offers a fuel economy of between 40 and 45mpg and 11bhp.

  • 1.4L Boosterjet: the larger option is less economical with fuel but does offer more power, with 124bhp.

All types of engines are also available with both manual and automatic transmission as well as front-wheel and all-wheel-drive. It’s also worth noting that, alongside an update in the engine offering, the Vitara also underwent a ‘facelift’ in 2018, which is worth knowing if you’re looking for a stylish SUV. There are also three trim options available in this range, including:

  • SZ4: the standard trim level for the Vitara, it has climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, 16-inch alloys and a CD player.

  • SZ-T: a decent upgrade, it has a touchscreen, sat-nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, plus 17-inch alloys.

  • SZ5: only available with the 1.4L engine, it has significant interior trims including a sunroof and suede seats, and extra technology such as adaptive cruise control, parking sensors and auto emergency braking.

  • S: top of the range for models with off-road capability, it also has sports suspension, black alloys and a stylish interior.

Depending on your specific needs, you might also want to consider models with the AllGrip four-wheel-drive features or those with extra styling packs such as Urban, Rugged, Kuro and Shiro.

Which Suzuki Vitara should you choose?

If you’re looking for fuel efficiency over longer journeys, then looking for a diesel model is recommended. Or, if you want similar performance when it comes to the cost of fuel, then the 1.0L Boosterjet might be a better option, though it doesn’t offer quite as much power. Most engine types are available with both types of transmission and front or all-wheel-drive depending on your specific needs.

In terms of trim, the SZ-T level or above is recommended thanks to its extra comforts and technologies, though if you can find a high-spec S model, then this would be recommended for those who prefer a four-wheel-drive.

What should you look out for in a used Suzuki Vitara?

A Suzuki Vitara is a great option for drivers that are looking for a decent, reliable SUV that’s good value for money. However, there are some specific reliability issues you need to keep an eye out for when reviewing a car’s servicing and MOT history, including:

  • Unnecessary braking due to problems in the automatic emergency brake system.

  • Engine rattles caused by timing chain issues, particularly in the older engine models.

  • Stiffness in the clutch or problems changing gear.

  • Regular oil changes that cause the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to become clogged.

  • Condenser fan motor failure, causing problems with the air con.
