Buying a used Renault Clio

One of the most recognisable and popular cars on UK roads, the Renault Clio is famous for its cute looks and fun driving performance. A small hatchback that’s simple but effective on the road, it’s ideal for drivers who’ve just passed their test or ones who want to enjoy a bit of fun on the road. Find out all about the Clio’s features and what to look for in a used model in this SPOTiCAR guide.

What Renault Clio models are available?

Since its first generation was launched in 1990, the Renault Clio has become one of the best-selling and most widely driven cars in the world. Recently, the small hatchback has gone through several design iterations, yet at its core it still remains an affordable, well-equipped and practical car. As such, it has a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines to suit every driver’s needs:

  • 1.2L 16v - the standard engine in the range, this petrol can reach up to 50.4mpg, 75bhp and a top speed of 104mph.

  • 0.9L Energy TCe 90 - the smallest turbocharged petrol engine, it offers plenty in terms of performance, including fuel efficiency of 67.3mpg, 90bhp and a top speed of 113mph.

  • 1.2L Energy TCe 120 - a more powerful version of the smaller engine, it has 120bhp and a top speed of 124mph.

  • 1.5L dCi 90 - an economical and efficient diesel engine, this offers up to 88.3mpg, 90bhp and a top speed of around 110mph.

  • 1.5L dCi 110 - an upgraded version of the standard diesel, it has a top speed of 121mph and 108bhp.

Both manual and automatic gearboxes are available across the Renault Clio range. Plus, there are a variety of trim options depending on each driver’s needs and budget:

  • Expression - the standard trim level, it comes equipped with cruise control, a DAB radio, smartphone connectivity and a sat nav system but no air con.

  • Play - this model includes air con, 16-inch alloys and front fog lights.

  • Dynamique Nav - technology upgrades include an improved stereo system and integrated sat nav. Plus, it has a premium interior with soft-touch dashboard and black and chrome exterior trim.

  • Dynamique S Nav - automatic climate control, electric rear windows, 17-inch alloy wheels and parking sensors are some of the upgrades in this trim.

  • Signature Nav - a top-of-the-line trim level, features include a TomTom sat nav, reversing camera, hands-free parking and leather trim seats.

Which used Renault Clio should you choose?

The range of engines and trims available means there’s a Renault Clio to suit many drivers’ needs. The first decision every driver needs to make is if they want air con in their car. If so, a trim level of Play or upwards will be best, with the Dynamic S Nav trim level recommended for families or those looking for a few extra comforts and safety technologies.

For first drivers, small families or those who want to have fun driving around towns, cities and country roads, the 0.9L TCe 90 engine will offer plenty of performance as well as great fuel efficiency. Alternatively, for those who regularly drive long distances, one of the diesel engine options would be preferable.

What should you look out for in a used Renault Clio?

There are plenty of Renault Clios out there, so if you’re looking to buy a used model, you need to look out for a few key elements when taking a car out for a test drive or looking at the MOT or servicing history:

  • Timing chain: in the 1.2L petrol and 1.5 diesel models this needs to be replaced every five years, which is important to check in cars of this age or older.

  • Brake hoses: there have been some brake hose recalls, so it’s important to check there are no leaks on the car you’re buying.

  • Body damage: the Clio’s popularity amongst young drivers and racers means there can sometimes be scratches or bumps on exterior trims.

  • Suspension and electrics: when test driving, listen out for any knocks or rattles and test out all the systems to make sure they work correctly.
