used KIA

If you’re looking to make the switch from a combustion engine car to an EV, you don’t want to sacrifice any of the benefits you get from a petrol or diesel vehicle, particularly if you’re buying a family car. Luckily, the Kia eNiro combines the practicality, space and comfort of a standard compact SUV with the added advantage of low carbon emissions. Find out all about the Kia eNiro and how you can find a good used model with SPOTiCAR.

What models are available?

Having taken the world by surprise with its launch in 2019, the Kia eNiro is a fully-electric alternative to the hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines in the standard Niro range. Despite this, the crossover SUV still encapsulates everything that Kia promises in the Niro models, including affordability, practicality and reliability. The front-wheel-drive models are also available with two battery sizes so drivers can find an option to best suit their needs:

  • 39kWh - the first model to be released to market, this battery is the smaller of the two and is ideal for urban or regular short-distance driving with 180 miles of electric range and 134bhp, giving a 0-60mph in 9.7 seconds.

  • 64kWh - the latest model has an upgraded battery that’s more suitable for long-distance trips. With 282 miles of range, a 0-60mph in 7.7 seconds and 201bhp, it’s great for any families that like to travel often.

Although no gearbox is required for the eNiro’s battery powertrain, there are paddles which allow drivers to select the level of energy regeneration they’d like to use based on the driving conditions. Designed to recharge the battery during coasting or braking, the system offers five levels, Off, 1, 2, 3 and One Pedal, which can help to increase acceleration or improve driving range depending on a driver’s needs. To enhance this further, there are several driving modes, including Eco, Eco+, Normal and Sport which help to tailor the car’s performance to the road.

When it comes to trim, there is very little to separate the two eNiro models from each other and the hybrid range. This means it comes well equipped with luxurious interior technology such as heated seats and steering wheel, an infotainment system and wireless phone charging. Plus, there are parking sensors and a rear camera as well as an optional heat pump to ensure the battery can perform its best even in wintery conditions.

Which used Kia eNiro should you choose?

If you’re looking to make the switch to an electric-powered vehicle, then you might be wondering whether all-electric or hybrid options are the best. When choosing a family SUV, this means weighing up the car’s practicality and affordability. In terms of practicality, the Niro hybrid offers the flexibility of being able to switch to petrol power when required. However, the all-electric version has a Type 2 charging cable which means it can be used at the majority of UK charging stations. Plus, when connected to a 100kW fast charger, it can gain 60% charge in less than 45 minutes.

The eNiro also has the benefit of emitting no carbon emissions compared to the 110g/km of the hybrid, which means any owners won’t be charged road tax. With the lower cost of electricity compared to fuel means the eNiro will save drivers money in the long term. However, the main differentiator is the amount of range which is about 500 miles on a single tank in the hybrid compared to the 282 miles on a full charge in the eNiro. So, depending on the type of driving performance you need, this is worth considering.

What should you look out for in a used Kia eNiro?

Kia has an excellent reputation for its reliability and this is the case with the eNiro, which has the same seven-year and 100,000-mile warranty as other combustion engine models. Plus, as it was released in 2019, very few reliability issues have been reported. With key technologies built specifically to extend the car’s range and performance, such as the heat pump and regenerative braking system, the eNiro will keep you running carbon free for mile after mile.
