Jeep Wrangler

One of the most iconic and recognisable vehicles in Jeep’s range, the Wrangler is one of the most well-known 4x4s that’s now seen as commonly on the road as it is off it. With its roots back in the Second World War, its heritage, classic looks and reliable performance on rough terrain make the Jeep Wrangler a great option for drivers who want to head off-road. Find out more about them with SPOTiCAR.

What models are available?

Built to be simple, practical and with enough power and performance to get drivers over any obstacle or terrain, the first Jeep Wrangler models were released in 1986. Now, the third and fourth generations are available on the used market, meaning there are lots of options out there for drivers who love getting stuck into some tricky tracks and driving conditions.

Plus, the engine options are just as straightforward as the vehicle itself:

  • 3.8L V6 280PS: with 280bhp, this petrol engine can pick up speed fairly quickly, though its fuel economy is low at 25mpg.

  • 2.8L CRD 200PS: a four-cylinder diesel model, it has plenty of power with 200bhp and a five-speed automatic transmission.

  • 2.2L Multijet II: available in the more recent models, this diesel engine may be the smallest option but is also powerful and quick.

There are also three trim options available in this range:

  • Sahara: the entry standard model, it has a removable hardtop, 17-inch alloys and underbody protection alongside some luxurious interior features such as cruise and climate control.

  • Overland: 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, a media system with phone connectivity and tinted glass are all part of this upgrade.

  • Rubicon: designed specifically for off-roaders, it has rock trails, short-ratio gears and an anti-roll bar which can be disconnected when required.

  • Sport: the basic trim level for the newer models, it comes with 17-inch wheels, a five-inch touchscreen display and skid plates, though it still has manual door locks and crank windows.

Which Jeep Wrangler should you choose?

The type of Jeep Wrangler you choose depends mainly on how extreme the driving conditions you’re planning on taking the vehicle to. If you’re looking for speedy acceleration, then the petrol engine would be best. If it’s a diesel you’re looking for, then the newer Multijet will be a better option. When it comes to trims, choose the Overland for some more comforts and the Rubicon for more off-road features.

What should you look out for in a used Jeep Wrangler?

Jeep Wranglers are designed to take plenty of wear and tear. Even so, if they’ve been used off-road for most of their life they might have some problems caused by the many rough miles they’ve endured. That’s why it’s important to check for certain common problems in the servicing or MOT history and as you take it for a test drive.

  • Failure in the throttle position sensor (TPS) which has a key role in sending information to the engine control module (ECM) as to how open the accelerator peddle is and can cause difficulties in driving performance.

  • Death wobble caused by parts of the steering components or suspension coming loose.

  • Issues with the totally integrated power module (TIPM) which can cause a range of problems with electronic or pump systems.

  • General wear and tear to the exterior, suspension, chassis and wheels.
