Hyundai Tucson

There are plenty of SUVs out there, so choosing the right one can be a challenge. If it’s a used family car you’re looking for though, the Hyundai Tucson will give you everything you need to keep you comfortable and safe on the road. Find out all about this model and how you can find the best used option with SPOTiCAR.

What models are available?

An affordable and good-looking crossover, the Hyundai Tucson is ideal for everyday driving with a range of safety and luxurious technologies that ensure the ride is comfortable for everyone. There is also a range of transmission and petrol and diesel engine options to choose from, meaning you can always find the best model for fuel economy and performance:

  • 1.6L GDi: the standard petrol engine option, it offers good all-round performance, reaching 40.4mpg and offering 132bhp and a top speed of 113mph.

  • 1.6L T-GDi: the turbocharged version of the petrol engine, it comes in manual and seven-speed automatic gearbox options.

  • 1.6L CRDi: with lower carbon emissions and decent fuel economy, this diesel engine is one of the most popular options, it’s available with manual and automatic transmissions.

  • 2.0L CRDi: the top-of-the-range engine, the diesel engine comes only with an automatic gearbox, has 185bhp and a top speed of 125mph.

Despite the reasonable price point, each Hyundai Tucson trim level offers a good level of technology, interior comfort and exterior quality:

  • S Connect: a replacement for the original entry trim level S, the S Connect has plenty of technology, including a seven-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, a DAB radio and safety systems like autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and driver alerts.

  • SE Nav: the main upgrade for this trim level is the addition of a sat nav which comes in addition to 17-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and climate control.

  • Premium and Premium SE: the highest trim level, it includes fully adjustable seats, LED headlights and skid plates.

Which Hyundai Tucson should you choose?

Depending on whether you want to prioritise fuel economy or driving performance, there is an engine and transmission option to suit you best. The turbocharger in the 1.6L T-GDi gives extra acceleration while the 1.6L CRDI offers great fuel economy on long journeys. Unless you want the benefit of a sat nav, the S Connect trim level has everything you could need, though the Premium option is completely luxurious and extra comfortable.

What should you look out for in a used Hyundai Tucson?

Though the Hyundai Tucson has a relatively good reputation for reliability, there are some key issues you need to look out for when taking it out on a test drive or reviewing its servicing and MOT history:

  • Engine knocking due to faulty rod bearings that were subject to a recall, particularly in the 2017 model.

  • Poor or jerky acceleration due to problems in the clutch that lead to hesitant starts from a complete stop.

  • Failures and stalls in the engine, often accompanied by noises and the engine light coming on, particularly in 2014, 2013 and 2012 model years.

  • Problems with the air-con and the door and boot catches which make them difficult to open or unlock.
