Buying a used Ford Puma

The first Ford Puma, a sport compact or small coupe, launched in 1997. Today, the Puma name lives on in the form of a compact or crossover SUV to rival the likes of the Nissan Juke and Volkswagen T-Roc. This popular car won the What Car? Small sports utility vehicle of the year three years running, Parkers Car of the Year and their 2022 Small Family Car of the Year. This makes it well-loved amongst buyers too and an ideal used car. Check out our guide to find out what engines and trims are available, which you should choose and what to look out for.

What models are available?

Ford Puma is an eye-catching small SUV that’s fun to drive due to great handling and nippy acceleration with a sensible side thanks to its low emissions, good fuel economy and a uniquely spacious boot. There are three petrol and diesel engine types to choose from, all boasting mild hybrid technology to enhance efficiency, with an all-electric version is set to hit the roads in 2024.

  • 1.0L EcoBoost Fox I3-T: This front-wheel drive petrol engine is turbocharged, with three-cylinders with 123hp.
  • 1.0L EcoBoost Hybrid Fox mHEV I3-T: Also front-wheel drive, the EcoBoost Hybrid Fox gives drivers 153hp.
  • 1.5L EcoBoost Dragon I3-T (Puma ST): The sporty petrol engine, similar to the Fiesta ST, has more power with around 200hp and 236lb torque which gives it a 0-60 in 6.7 seconds.

After you’ve chosen the engine that suits your driving style and lifestyle, there are plenty of trim levels for different needs and budgets amongst the 2022 range. From the basic trim to the sports editions to the fully-kitted out high-end alterative – there’s a Puma for everyone.

  • Puma Titanium: The entry level Puma Titanium has 17” Absolute Black 10-spoke alloys, LED daytime lights and rear lamps, power-foldable heated door mirrors plus autonomous braking, post-impact braking, cruise control and lane assist.
  • Puma ST-Line: On top of the Titanium features, 17” 5x2-spoke alloys in Black Machined Finish, the ST-Line Body Styling Kit and sporty suspension are distinctive to this trim.
  • Puma ST-Line X: Next up, you get chunkier 18” alloy wheels, partial premium Sensico trim, rear privacy glass, electronic air temperature control (EATC) and Ford’s B&O premium audio and navigation systems.
  • Puma ST-Line Vignale: The Vignale is a stylish trim option. It features exclusive 18” alloys, fixed LED headlamps, a unique upper grille and surround, black gloss and chrome on the front and rear bumpers, a high chrome waistline and bodyside chrome styling.
  • Puma ST: The Ford Puma ST acts as a standalone model and only comes with the 1.5L turbocharged engine. It has multiple driving modes, a 12.3” digital display, a 575-watt audio system plus striking interior and exterior styling.
  • Puma ST-Line X Gold Edition: Very similar to the ST-Line Vignale, this trim has all the same features but added gold 18” alloys.

Which Ford Puma should you choose?

Those looking for high-performance and maximum driving enjoyment, should opt for the Puma ST. It only comes with a manual gearbox but of the compact SUV market, it’s got the best and most precise handling. If style is key, the ST-Line Vignale or ST-Line X Gold Edition are please on the eye with high-end features and luxury inside and out. However, all trims and engine types stack up against their competitors when it comes to performance, style, fuel economy and space so you can’t go too far wrong with the Puma.

What should you look out for in a used Ford Puma?

To date, there have been three Ford Puma recalls but very few cars have been affected. Below are the three recall reasons plus some other potential issues with used models.

  • Hybrid battery: 428 Ford Puma models were recalled as the hybrid battery connections were not torqued to the correct Ford specification. The retailer you purchase your car from should be aware of this and any issues will likely have been resolved
  • Air bag: 24,249 vehicles were recalled because of faulty air bag retention springs. Find out if the used vehicle you’re viewing could be affected and if so, ask the retailer to install a replacement.
  • eCall system: Only 100 cars had software issues which affected the eCall system. When viewing a used model, check the systems are working before buying.
  • Wheels: Several of the Ford Puma models have large alloys which are easily damaged. Too much damage on the wheels can imply poor driving which could cause internal issues so check them carefully before purchasing.
