Nimble enough for weekend countryside drives and practical enough for the daily commute, find out how to buy the right used BMW 1 Series in this SPOTiCAR guide.

What models are available?

First launched on the market in 2004 as an evolution of the compact 3 Series, the high level of performance and contemporary look of the 1 Series has made it a popular choice amongst petrolheads. Three and five-door hatchbacks, a two-door coupe and a two-door convertible make up the model range. Plus, plenty of trim and engine options mean drivers have lots of choices when it comes to power and comfort.

Available with petrol (indicated by the letter ‘i’), diesel (indicated by the letter ‘d’) and BMW’s fuel-efficient high-performance engine ED Plus, each category offers increasing levels of power and acceleration:

  • 118i petrol with up to 47.9mpg, 136bhp and a top speed of 130mph.

  • 120i petrol with up to 47.1mpg, 184bhp and a top speed of 143mph.

  • 125i petrol with up to 45.6mpg, 224bhp and a top speed of 151mph.

  • M140i petrol high performance with up to 38.2mpg, 340bhp and a top speed of 155mph.

  • 116d diesel with up to 67.3mpg, 116bhp and a top speed of 124mph.

  • 118d ED Plus diesel with up to 64.2mpg, 150bhp and a top speed of 132mph.

  • 120d ED Plus diesel with up to 60mpg, 190bhp and a top speed of 142mph.

  • 125d ED Plus diesel with up to 58.9mpg, 224bhp and a top speed of 149mph.

All BMW 1 Series models are available with an automatic gearbox and the 118i and most diesel options are available with a manual (apart from the 125d). Though what really sets the 1 Series apart from similar hatchbacks is its rear-wheel drive, which is standard across the whole range. There’s also a four-wheel drive option which BMW calls xDrive.

Alongside all these engine and transmission options are a variety of trim levels, all of which offer good levels of comfort with increasing amounts of technology, interior and exterior features:

  • SE - this is the standard level of trim in the 1 Series range and offers 16-inch alloy wheels, Sat Nav, air con, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, a leather steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights.

  • Sport - this version has enhanced interior and exterior trims, with 17-inch wheels, comfortable sports seats and a high-quality in-cabin design.

  • EfficientDynamics Plus - an upgrade of the SE option, this model has cruise control and rear parking sensors.

  • M Sport - 18-inch alloy wheels, signature M badges on the interior, LED headlights, a lower suspension and an exclusive body kit make this model a definitive sporty version.

  • M140i - this trim level is at the top of the range, with a leather interior, twin exhaust pipes and improved braking and steering systems to match the more powerful engine.

Which used BMW 1 Series should you choose?

BMW 1 Series models have become popular thanks to their balance of comfort and practicality with power and performance. This means plenty of drivers can find an option to suit their needs within the 1 Series range. For a small family car with good fuel efficiency and a comfortable interior, the 116d SE ED Plus can reach up to 67.3mpg while still being carbon efficient and powerful. This model is also available in a practical, five-door version.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a premium hatchback with a super-fun driving experience, then the high-performance M140i model should definitely be on your list. Great steering, 340bhp and a sporty suspension combine with a top-quality interior finish, exterior features and helpful technology to create an exciting everyday drive.

What should you look out for in a used BMW 1 Series?

BMW cars, including the 1 Series range, are well-known for their reliability. However, there are a few elements to look out for as you’re viewing a used model or examining its service history:

  • Interior or exterior trim problems: the sporty nature of these cars can mean they pick up dents and scratches over the years. Issues have also been reported with the quality of some interiors, so inspecting a 1 Series before you buy is key to making sure there’s no damage.

  • Transmission issues: though there aren’t many 1 Series models that come with manual gearboxes, there have been some problems reported with the clutches and transmission systems. Checking the MOT and service history for these issues will help you avoid any major bills in the future.

  • Steering racks: when you’re test driving, make sure you take the 1 Series around a few corners and roundabouts. If you feel any tightness or hear any grinding, the car could be subject to the steering rack problems which have been reported in this model.

  • ECU failure: making sure your 1 Series has a warranty in place will mean you’re protected against any ECU failures you find in the months after you make your purchase. Warning lights, problems starting or idling the engine and a drop in fuel efficiency are all issues to look out for during a test drive or after buying a 1 Series.
