Ford Mondeo

The Ford Mondeo has been a household name for just shy of 30 years. An all-rounder, designed to have worldwide appeal and tick a lot of car buyers’ boxes, it’s been loved by professionals, families and even on the racetrack. First created as an evolution of the Ford Sierra, the Mondeo was more conventional but perfectly hit the mark for the mid 90s and beyond. After an iconic history, in 2021 we found out that Ford were stopping production. But, with plenty of used models on the market, it’s still an ideal car for many, so here’s what you should look out for when buying one.

What popular Ford Mondeo models are available?

Ford Mondeo’s are solidly built, spacious and reliable. This makes them an excellent used car– especially for families who need extra space and professionals looking for a motor they can depend on and be comfortable in as they clock up miles. When it comes to upkeep, Mondeos have relatively low-service costs. Replacement parts are easy to get hold of and affordable. The model is generally an economical choice, making it popular as a company car, but the mileage on newer editions is slightly less favourable. If you’re looking to save on fuel, their hybrid and EcoBlue models will be your best bet.

Zetec

H4 Titanium

Similar to the Titanium, but slightly upgraded is the Titanium X. It comes with a few added extras like heated seats, heated front windscreen and a touch-screen satnav.

What should you look out for in a used Ford Mondeo?

When buying a used car, it’s important you asses the condition and key features. Luckily, at SPOTiCAR, all vehicles are manufacturer approved and go through a thorough vehicle history and mileage check plus a comprehensive multi-point check. This means it’s unlikely that any faults will slip through the cracks. Even so, here’s a list of key things to look out for:

  • Power steering. There have been some reports of blockages causing faults so when you go for a test drive, check it’s working as it should be.

  • Air conditioning. Try all the air con settings as units regularly fail over time. Try each vent to see if they all blow cold air evenly.

  • Automatic locking. Lock and unlock the car multiple times to check for any issues.

  • Electric windows. Do they move smoothly? There have also been some driver reports about them opening after locking which might mean the keys batteries need replacing.

  • Noise. Listen out and if there’s a lot of sound while driving it could be an engine or suspension issue.
